Week in OSINT #2019-46

Been busy… Short update…

No, I really mean it… This time it’s a really short one! I am already happy I was able to create a 10-minute tip for OSINTcurious last week, created two presentations for this week and even had time to study! I’ll see whether I can come up with a few more topics next time… Until then, enjoy the following items:

  • YouTube DataViewer
  • GenesUnited
  • Automatic Transcripts
  • Geolocation

Site: YouTube DataViewer

Intelx.io has cloned the Amnesty YouTube data viewer and enhanced it a bit, by showing all the meta data that is available for any given video on YouTube. The original tool was already a wonderful and easy to use tool, and it just got better!

Site: GenesUnited

AccessOSINT shared a link the other day about the site ‘GenesUnited’, a site owned by Findmypast. It gives you the opportunity to search in historical records for newspaper articles, travel documents, BDM records and such. And in case you need it, there are also localised versions for Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Article: Automatic Transcripts

Benjamin Strick tagged me on Twitter last week, since he saw a tweet by Chad Loder about how Apple had introduced automatic transcriptions of podcasts. This is something that can come in handy for journalists who are trying to search for specific news, but are unable to listen to every possible podcast to find the information they need.

Article: Geolocation

In April 2017 Julia Bayer started Quiztime, to let journalists and investigators practice their geolocation and verification skills. Then Yandex made solving a lot of quizzes overly easy, simply by being brilliant in reverse image searching… And then… There was NixIntel… He has come up with some brilliant techniques, but his latest blog is a must. Step by step he shows you how to use Google Earth to visualise a passing aeroplane.

Have a good week and have a good search!
