Week in OSINT #2020-39

Good morning and welcome back to another filled episode of Week in OSINT! With loads of talks from conferences, tips and a new site with historical information on domains.

After a different episode last week, which was hopefully just as interesting, I found time to go over some items that popped up in my time line last week. Lots of talks and videos this week, together with some tips and an interesting new website I found the other day:

  • Website Investigations
  • Visualising Data with Unfurl
  • Myip.ms
  • Nixintel's Start.me
  • Australian OSINT Symposium
  • BSides Copenhagen

Tip: Website Investigations

Do you know what information a domain name or website hold? Or do you maybe need a reminder? Read the following Twitter thread by Aware Online where he gives some tips on the subject.

Media: Visualising Data with Unfurl

Ludo Block shared a link to a talk about Unfurl given at the SANS DFIR Summit 2020, given by Ryan Benson. Ryan has written more awesome articles, like his very recent post on the timestamps used by TikTok which may help you with question number 4 of my OSINTQuiz.

Site: Myip.ms

Since RiskIQ changed their free tier I've been trying to find other websites to find things like historical information on websites. Of course there are sites like SecurityTrails, but sources that are completely free and don't require an account, and even have detailed information on IP addresses, changes over time and rankings are very rare. By pure accident I stumbled upon Myip.ms and this really fills some gaps that I used to have and really needed, especially on historical IP addresses. It might not be the most user friendly or best looking user interface, but it's functional and that's the most important thing. So go check it out and let me know what you discovered!

Links: Nixintel's Start.me

Everyone who's been following the hashtag #OSINT on Twitter since 2016, should know the Dutch bookmark manager Start.me. But do you also know that they share awesome Strat.me pages via their Twitter account? I've been using it for a few years for a private link collection, but slowly moved my most important links to this website. And I recently added Nixintel's Start.me page on that list, because he has a solid collection of really good links in there. Go check it out!

Early September there was a big OSINT conference online, where a lot of well known people gave talks on several topics. People like Benjamin Strick, Elise Thomas, Micah Hoffman, Chris Poulter and many more shared their knowledge. And the best thing of all is that the majority of those talks are available for free on the website of OSINT Combine.

Media: BSides Copenhagen:

On September 18 and 19 there was BSides København, where some well known OSINT-y people held a talk. On the first day there were two talks that you should see, given by Rae Baker and Matthias Wilson. The streams of both days are available in Vimeo and at the time of publishing this they are still editing to add all the talks as separate videos on their channel.
